Ink cartridge or toner cartridge – what is the difference? Well, ink cartridges or inkjet cartridges are the replaceable part of an inkjet printer, which stores the ink ready for printing. Each ink cartridge contains a small chip to enable it to communicate with the printer, allowing accurate ink levels to be visible on the computer system. Normally an inkjet printer contains three colour inks (magenta, cyan, yellow) and one black ink. However, certain inkjet photo printers require up to eight or ten different ink cartridges to function, which allows greater colour detail to be transferred to the paper when printing. Laser toner cartridges are slightly different to ink cartridges. Toner cartridges are the replaceable component of laser printers. Generally toner cartridges are only available in three colours (magenta, cyan, yellow) and one black toner. The most popular toner cartridge sold is black, as many laser printers are monochrome, allowing only for black and white printing. The laser toner is made of a fine toner powder. When printing the powder is transferred to the paper via the drum of the printer, and the powder is then fused onto the paper by the rollers.
